More About Joel
What inspired you to become a broker/analyst/manager/officer, and how did you get started in the industry?
It's something I was always interested in, as numbers had always come relatively easily to me. My dad was a local bank manager turned mortgage broker in the town where I grew up. It’s a social role that allows you to help people without them needing to pay you, which always appealed to me. I wanted to work with Dad straight out of school, but he thought that at 17, people might not trust me with their finances. Not long after, I joined the Navy. When I was looking to purchase my first property, I met Chris. I mentioned to him that I wanted to become a broker once I discharged and asked if he had any tips for entering the industry. He essentially offered me a job as soon as I was ready. I started at UF in January 2019.
If you could describe your work style in three words, what would they be?
Efficient, Proactive, Approachable
Can you share a fun fact about yourself that most people don’t know?
I’ve eaten a worm burger.
If you could share a meal with anyone from any era, who would you choose and why?
Johnny Cash. He lived such an interesting life and would definitely be a lot of fun. Hopefully, I could bring my Pop along so Johnny could hear his Folsom Prison Blues impression.
Can you share a story where you helped a client (it doesn’t matter how small or big) that makes you smile?
Paul had been dreaming of owning a farm since he was 5 years old. After finally finding his dream property, he showed up on auction day and managed to negotiate a deal just under his limit. Here’s what he had to say about his experience working with our senior broker Joel and the UF team: "Joel was absolutely outstanding—5 stars is not even close to the mark. After trying 4 other brokers, Joel got us more than we hoped for in the shortest possible time. I just didn’t think it was possible, and we got the best interest rate to boot. Communication was so good during this very stressful time. I’m so very thankful for all he’s done for us—it is greatly appreciated. I have and will recommend his services to anyone!"
What’s one piece of advice you always give to first-time homebuyers or to investors?
Do your research and due diligence, but don’t get too bogged down. The property is rarely going to be perfect, and it doesn’t have to be. Celebrate it—it’s a massive achievement.
What’s your favourite way to unwind after work or during the weekend?
Fishing of any variety! There’s no better way to relax.
