Meet Donna Makila
What inspired you to get into the finance space, and how did you get started in the industry?
I fell into a traineeship with a small credit union when I was 20 and started off as a teller. After being trained in personal loans, I decided to pursue a career in finance. Gradually, I worked my way up within credit unions to become a mortgage officer. After having my middle child, I decided to explore finance from a different perspective and moved into broking about 12 years ago.
If you could describe your work style in three words, what would they be?
Helpful, passionate, thorough.
Can you share a fun fact about yourself that most people don’t know?
When I was younger, I used to dance at halftime during Penrith Panthers games.
If you could share a meal with anyone from any era, who would you choose and why?
Paul Walker. He’s my absolute favourite actor, and I was devastated when he passed away.
Can you share a story where you helped a client (it doesn’t matter how small or big) that makes you smile?
I love the happiness, excitement, and appreciation you see in first home buyers—that always makes me smile.
What’s one piece of advice you always give to first-time homebuyers or investors?
Pay as much off your loan as possible when rates are low, so you’re always ahead in repayments when rates go up.
What’s your favourite way to unwind after work or during the weekend?
My favourite way to unwind is to do absolutely nothing. It doesn’t happen often, as I’m always on the go with my kids and my sport.
